September 2016 - Newsletter 4

McQueen Gin

Firstly hello and welcome to all our new subscribers, we feel we have met each one of you personally at our events. This newsletter is a little late compared to previous, because we wanted to share our exciting news with you first.

You may be following us on Social Media and seen us talk about a new Gin, which we will be launching on the of 4th November. We had a fantastic tasting session yesterday up at the distillery, with some willing volunteers and the feedback was brilliant. So we would like to formally announce to you - our gin fans - that the new gin will be McQueen Dry Gin - with a white label. This will be our Signature Gin going forward and will be available all year round. Yes - that means we will also be looking to introduce seasonal gin in the future.

McQueen Dry Gin will be available to preorder from 28th October, with shipment shortly after launch.

As if a new signature gin is not enough news - we are in the process of putting together a crowdfunding campaign. With rewards such as signed & numbered first batch bottles, limited editions, personal tours and possible gin making classes, all are being considered as rewards for your support. As newsletter subscribers, you will be first to learn about the rewards and offered an early bird incentive. More details in our next newsletter and only if you have subscribed.

We also had exciting news the other week from the Craft Distilling Expo in London, we got a Highly Commended for McQueen Sweet Citrus Gin - not bad for a 4 month old new Gin company.

Finally, just a quick round up of where you can find us next:

16/10 - Loch Lomond Shore farmers Market
29/10 - Food Pairing with McQueen Gin & Callander Meadows restaurant
4&5/11 - Stirling Gin festival (yes with the new Gin)
11-13/11 - BBC Food Show Olympia, London
19-20/11 - Scotlands Outdoor Chocolate festival, Perth
25-27/11 - Foodies Festival, Edinburgh
3/12 - Santa Naughty Gin grotto, Callander
10/12 - Artisan Market - Perth
Details of all these events can be found on our website or our Facebook page.

Until we meet again, which I hope is soon.

Games, Festivals & Tastings

Since the launch in June we seem to be on a roadshow of venues throughout Central Scotland - you may have even seen Dale in his Kilt - oot and aboot, great fun but exhausting for such a small team. So to help out with a very busy 3 months coming up - and dare I say the run up to Christmas. We are expanding the team by 2 permanent staff, hopefully by early September. We are in the process of interviewing for a Graduate in Distilling, someone who will work with Dale in creating new and exciting products for the Gin market and help us to expand the current unique range. We are also adding a book keeper to the team, to free up Dale from the desk and let him get on with what he’s good at. (Although the jury is out on that).

The additional headcount also means that we will be at more fantastic events -

  • Stirling Highland Games - 20th August
  • Loch Lomond Food festival - 3rd-4th September
  • Juniper festival, Glasgow - 10th September
  • The Wee G&T Festival, Perth - 17th September
  • Stirling Gin Festival - 4th-5th November
  • Festival of Chocolate, Perth - 19th-20th November
  • Foodies Christmas, Edinburgh - 25th-27th November

Lots of places to come and say hello, have a taste and maybe buy some early Christmas presents (for your self).

Seb our intern from France, has been extremely busy building us a portable events bar from the bottle pallets, fantastic work and he even made a stencil of the logo. You will be able to stand at the bar and try it out for yourself if you come to any of the above events.

As sales ramp up and our gin is appearing in more places everyday - over 55 locations in less than 3 months, we have decided to put together our very own Gin map of where you can buy or drink our Gin. This map will let you find a stockist or bar near you. If we are missing any, let us know by email or on social media.
You can find the Gin map at http://www.mcqueengin.co.uk/gin-map. This is how it looks today:-

Finally hello to our new subscribers that we met at the recent Callander Highland Games and Loch Levens Larder tastings earlier this month. Hope you enjoyed the Gin and remember you can buy online at http://www.mcqueengin.co.uk/shop, or pop into the distillery for a wee visit - but call before hand to make sure we are about.

McQueen Gin - 1 month old

It’s just over a month since we launched in Callander on the 3rd of June, we have been so frantically busy that it could have been a year ago. Thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement - we love hearing from you and seeing your pictures of you enjoying our gin.

The Juniper Festival in Edinburgh was a resounding success with lots of interest being generated - including getting 2 mentions in The Scotsman food & drink section - and listed as 1 of the top 5 new Scottish Gins. We have also been featured on the latest Gin Map of Scotland created by http://blog.5pm.co.uk/2016/06/love-scottish-gin-need-see-new-gin-map-scotland/

Dale and Vicky were at the Scottish Edge awards in June picking up our wild card trophy and cash prize. This award will be used to employ a young person to learn the distilling process and work with us for at least a year.

Our distribution list is growing daily with just about all our local outlets in Callander selling our Gin and specialist shops within the Central belt stocking up daily. A good number of pubs, restaurants and hotels have us behind the bar as well. We are in discussions with a number of national distributors and we are in 2 of the Marriott Hotels already. Online sales are growing steadily too, with new customers from Inverness to London.

On a final note, we have the recipe for the gin cocktail that Mrs McQueen Senior (Kit)
entered into the Pat O’Brien Pub in New Orleans competition in the 70’s.

Kit’s Spring Fizz

Kit’s Spring Fizz
1 part Gin ( we recommend McQueen Sweet Citrus Gin) - to which you add 1 part Green Chartreuse Liqueur and 1 part Maraschino Liqueur into a cocktail shaker
filled with ice - shake vigorously to mix, then strain into a highball glass with ice, top with Tonic - Twist of Lime or Lemon - Sprig of mint. Making it a nice long cool drink.

We have had a fantastic launch weekend on the 3rd of June in Callander. The sun was out, the town was busy and we had queues out the door waiting to sample the latest addition to the Scottish Craft Gin market. We want to say a massive thank you to Clanranald Charity for the use of their Church, to Deli Ecosse for providing nibbles, Thistle Rose Candles and to Dawn, Aimee, Lorraine, Bas, Carrie, Holly, Natalie, Matt and Alex for their help during the launch.

Mr & Mrs McQueen - the team behind McQueen Gin

We have posted a number of pictures on to our Facebook page, if you see yourself - why don’t you tag and share - for fun.

June has started with us hitting the ground running, with a number of local shops, pubs, restaurants and distributors placing orders to stock our fantastic Gin (we will keep you up to date with stockists on the website). The press has been lively with a feature article in Park Life - based in the National Park and a feature in the Gin Wag newsletter from Chrissy and Simon at Gin Club Scotland. We have had some fantastic reviews from 56 North Edinburgh and David T. Smith at Summerfruitcup - http://www.mcqueengin.co.uk/blog

At McQueen Gin HQ we have been gearing up for our first major Gin Festival in Edinburgh - the Juniper Festival 10th -12th June.

We are also now in the Ginventory app available from the Apps store for Apple and Android, and we have been included in the latest Gin Map of Scotland -http://blog.5pm.co.uk/2016/06/love-scottish-gin-need-see-new-gin-map-scotland/

The second batch of all 4 flavours is already in production to meet exceptional demand, with batches of only 300 bottles of each flavour, it will be distributed one a first come basis. Remember we can sell direct to you via the website or come and visit us at the Distillery - just give us a call first to make sure we are about.

All our products are available buy online at http:// www.mcqueengin.co.uk/shop
We have a number of public appearances in the pipeline over the next few months:-
  • Callander Highland Games 31st July
  • Stirling Highland Games 20th August

If you have an event that you think we should be at, contact [email protected]

Finally - it appears that the McQueen’s have a wee bit of a story about Gin, Dales’ mother lived in America and was a barmaid for a period of time, during which she entered a competition with a Gin cocktail at the world famous Pat O’Brien’s in New Orleans (Vicky & Dale have also frequented since). We are waiting on some ingredients to arrive and will provide that recipe in our next newsletter.
