Our Gin Journey

The McQueen Gin experience so far has turned into an incredible adventure in a very short space of time. It all began in 2015, at precisely Gin O’clock, and the rest as they say is history (even making history) for our world-first and award-winning gins.

The McQueen Gin experience so far has turned into an incredible adventure in a very short space of time. It all began in 2015, at precisely Gin O’clock, and the rest as they say is history (even making history) for our world-first and award-winning gins.

As engineer Dale and chef Vicky McQueen sat and enjoyed a gin in their garden, the idea is born to combine their technical and culinary skills with their true passion - gin!

After much tinkering and testing, McQueen Gin is ready for production. Work begins on the McQueen Distillery in February and our first still, “Little Maggie”, arrives in April. After some final adjustments and fine-tuning, McQueen Gin bursts into the market with not one, not two, not three, but FOUR WORLD-FIRST GIN FLAVOURS; Sweet Citrus, Mocha, Smokey Chilli and Chocolate Mint.

Also, with the distillery up and running, we welcomed our very first guests for The McQueen Gin Distillery Experience. Our original ‘boutique’ distillery tour might have been a quick one, but that simply meant guests got to our delicious gin tasting sooner – which they seemed to appreciate!

Shortly after, our award-winning McQueen Super Premium Dry and another world first flavour in our Spiced Chocolate Orange Gin were then introduced.

2016

After much tinkering and testing, McQueen Gin is ready for production. Work begins on the McQueen Distillery in February and our first still, “Little Maggie”, arrives in April. A year and a half of passionate craft pays off and Christmas comes early as our Chocolate Mint Gin is listed by ALDI Scotland in November! This very first ALDI gin festival event was a huge milestone for McQueen Gin and one that becomes more significant every day as our partnership continues to grow.

This very first ALDI gin festival event was a huge milestone for McQueen Gin and one that becomes more significant every day as our partnership continues to grow.

What an incredible year. The popularity of our distilled to be different gins was growing faster than we ever could have imagined, meaning our home had to grow too. In February, we broke ground on our new McQueen Gin Distillery, far in advance of our original plans.

April brought with it another major moment in our so far short history. Having become well-known for our iconic blue-glazed ceramic packaging, we made the environmentally conscious move to our new fully recyclable glass bottle – but of course retaining our McQueen Gin crest embossed into each bottle.

What followed was a McQueen Gin boom we never could have predicted. Driven by the launch of our McQueen Colour Changing Gin and McQueen Pink Gin, an avalanche of new listings brought our adventurous Scottish spirit to gin lovers across the UK.

ALDI took McQueen Pink Gin and McQueen Forest Fruit Colour Changing Gin nationwide across the UK while ALDI Scotland launched McQueen Violet Gin. We also launched our 5th world-first flavour as McQueen Coconut & Lime Gin brought the taste of summer to Sainsbury’s stores across Scotland.

However, May 2019 marked perhaps the biggest moment in the McQueen Gin adventure to date. Our new distillery was finally ready to open its doors, increasing our capacity by 1000% (that’s a lot of gin)! A mix of the local community and national press were in attendance, with First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon doing the honours.

August saw us dispatch the first of many containers of McQueen Forest Fruits Colour Changing Gin down under in ALDI Australia.

Towards the later stages of the year, we opened our new shop in the heart of Stirling, one of Scotland’s most historic cities. The McQueen Gin Emporium has become the flagship store for the McQueen brand.

At the start of the COVID­­-19 outbreak, there was a national shortage of hand sanitiser, we wanted to do our part to help the community. We started to produce sanitiser and took the conscious decision not to sell it to anyone, this was a donation, we felt that in times like these no one should be profiteering.
Towards the end of the year, we launched a complete bottle re-brand, opting for a contemporary and impactful label, making the McQueen name front and centre as it should be.

Although early in the year, at McQueen we have no intention of slowing down. We have become the first in the UK to create a full augmented reality experience within each of our six core range bottles. We have launched the ‘World’s Coolest Labels’ which come to life to create an exciting, immersive gin experience for customers.!
